What is Varnished Ink on Paper? This story starts with the appearance about ten years ago of inkjet printers with archival pigment inks. Suddenly it was possible to make a fine color print myself instead of sending it off to a lab. The ability to make my own color prints was and is wonderful, it gives me control over the result, and it gives me the ability to continuously tweak and explore an image, looking for its full potential.
As I took these wonderful prints away from my printer I delighted in the qualities of the ink on the paper, and it was always with regret that I went on to the next necessary step, framing them under glass for protection. Suddenly I felt a barrier between me and my prints, with glare and reflections to distract from my image.
So I decided to remove the barrier. I spent five years experimenting with different varnishes and settled on a materials system developed for acrylic painters. I use acrylic varnishes to coat the surface of the prints. I airbrush the varnish on to achieve a fine matte finish. I use matte medium as my “glue” to affix the print to a canvas support -- either a canvas-covered board or a stretched canvas. I got this idea after I learned that the Expressionist painters had done a lot of work on paper and then mounted the paper on canvas.
The prints in this show have been made over the last five years and the varnish surfaces show the evolution of my techniques.
I am happy with the result. I feel that my prints remain accessible, but are protected from the chemicals and moisture in the air and the fading power of light.
