Robert Manz has been making photographs since 1967; he received his basic training at the Harvard Crimson, where he was a photo editor.
He is active at the Cataumet Arts Center and is a member of the Falmouth Artist's Guild.
In his work, he seeks to explore the precious qualities of the land and its people. His work can be seen at his studio, at Jan Collins Selman Fine Art in Falmouth, and at the Cataumet Arts Center.
Through 2007 he worked with 35mm film cameras, scanning the positive or negative images, and printing them on water color paper using high resolution inkjet with archival pigment inks. At the end of 2007 he started working with a Nikon D300, and from then his work has been entirely digital.
In 2001 he began developing ways to use varnishes as a means of protecting his prints, and of presenting the prints without glass. This work culminated in 2007 in a set of media and techniques he terms “varnished ink on paper” -- each print is coated with multiple fine layers of acrylic varnish, mounted on canvas and framed. The result is a protective coating and presentation that allows the same immediacy to the print that one feels with a painting.
He teaches courses on practicing photography as an art form at Cataumet Arts Center and the Falmouth Artists Guild.
He lives in the town of Bourne, Cape Cod and the town of Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland.

Statement
The land, and the people in it, are precious….any land, any people.
In my images I try to appreciate and reveal this. I do not think of the images as documents, but as revelations.
Each image attempts to look beyond the surface and to reveal something about the preciousness of the land and its people.
I was raised in Pennsylvania. Currently I live on Cape Cod and in County Mayo.
